Economical Approaches to Clean Space

Abstract:For nanotechnology research and pilot manufacturing facilities, whether new construction or retrofit, clean space is commonly a critical requirement. These spaces can become one of the expensive, hard to integrate programs of the project. These areas need to be embedded in the facility with careful attention to many technical and regulatory requirements in order to be cost effective as well as user friendly. This presentation will answer some of the following questions: How can costs be minimized and still maintain the critical design features and functionality of the space? When space is a limiter; can this facility incorporate all the required elements into the overall building envelope without sacrificing the flexibility of the research or pilot line? In many cases the answers to these issues should be addressed during the early stages of the design. We will demonstrate how to gain understanding of the facility’s intended purpose and the technical requirements of the users. We will show which elements are critical conditions and which constraints must be understood in order to guarantee a cost effective approach to the design of nanotechnology research and pilot facilities. This presentation will use recent case studies to illustrate various design approaches and the impact they have on key nanotech research programs that require clean space. Understanding the regulatory requirements and the impact of costly decisions will ultimately give each attendee the edge on design and will help them keep control of the costs that tend to escalate during these projects.
