| Abstract: | The strong size-dependent magnetic properties of transition metal nanocrystals can be used to estimate the scaling limits of magnetic storage, a key component of information technology. High Ku (magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant) materials become then very attractive for ultrahigh density magnetic recording applications as they allow smaller and thermally stable media grains. Prominent candidates are tetragonal inter-metallic compounds (Ll0 phases such as FePt and CoPt), which have 20–40 times higher Ku values than today’s best storage media [1]. L10 phases would allow about 3 times smaller grain diameters and a potential 10-fold area density increase, far beyond the currently projected 40 -100 Gbits/in2 mark. |
