Abstract:Organic/inorganic nanocomposites have become an effective source of advanced materials as they usually exhibit unique properties that traditional composites and conventional materials do not have. They combine the advantages of the inorganic material (rigidity, high thermal stability) and the organic polymer (flexibility, ductility, and processibility). Moreover, they usually also contain special properties of nanoparticles that can be developed, leading to materials with improved properties for electrical, optical, structural, electro-optical, non-linear optical, or related applications. Additionally, titanium dioxide is viewed as an important inorganic component in nanocomposites for the improvement of mechanical and dielectrical properties. Therefore, polyimide-titanium dioxide (PI/TiO2) nanocomposites have received particular attention, which can be used for an embedded capacitor or an insulating layer for organic thin film transistor. However, increasing the content of titanium dioxide causes the films opaque and agglomeration of the titanium dioxide into large particles. In this study, we have investigated polyimide-titanium dioxide nanocomposite system to reduce the agglomeration and to achieve the mono-dispersity of the nano-sized TiO2 in PAA through a surface modification of TiO2 using a silane coupling agent.
