Solution Combustion Synthesis of Nano Materials

Authors:P. Dinka and A. Mukasyan

Keywords:nano-size powders, solution combustion synthesis, steam reforming
Abstract:In this work we present results on novel approaches related to the solution Combustion (SC) of nano-sized materials. First it was shown that under optimized conditions, SC reactions can be locally initiated and a steady-state self-propagating regime (so-called SHS mode) can be achieved for the most solution-type systems. Second, Impregnation CS (ICS) approach, which involves dipping of porous supports into a desired reactive solution followed by its combustion was also utilized.
It was shown that by optimization of above approaches catalysts with high specific surface area (up to 250 m2/g) can be synthesized. More specifically, extensive library of perovskite-based nano-catalysts of LaFeO3 family was synthesized by using VCS, SHS and ICS modes. The obtained materials were characterized on their phase composition, microstructure and specific surface area. Comparison of these characteristics allowed us to conclude on the effectiveness of used methods in synthesis of nano materials with desired properties. The catalysts prepared by VCS, SHS and ICS approaches were tested in the auto-thermal steam reforming reaction of heavy hydrocarbons to produce hydrogen. For best catalysts the full fuel conversion and high hydrogen selectivity were achieved under optimum reaction conditions.
