Abstract:We will discuss several approaches to DND modification and surface functionalization that results in particles sizes ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers that are stable in a variety of solvents. DND specific for biological [4], polymer composites, galvanic coatings and other applications has been developed and will be discussed. Another important issue in the field of DND is DND fractioning [5]. Starting with as-received polydispersed diamond powder, it is possible to separate it into ~5-7 fractions. In addition to sedimentation stability that is achieved by changing the surface chemistry, DND fractioning provides particle sizes necessary for particular applications. Several exemplary applications of the functionalization/fractioning strategy will be discussed. We will also briefly outline the challenges associated with the analysis of the elemental and carbon phase composition of DND supplied by different vendors. In order for an end user to be successful in the development of applications of this fascinating material, certification/verification of the product offered by vendors is necessary for the selection of materials suitable for specific applications..
