Imation Tera Angstrom™ Technology - Nanotechnology Applications

Authors:S.K. Kulkarni
Affilation:Imation Corp., US
Pages:102 - 106
Keywords:nano scale, particulate
Abstract:Imation Tera Angstrom Technology achieves surface smoothness and uniformity on magnetic tape media that allows for increased bit and track density and increased storage capacity. This revolutionary and proprietary advanced metal particulate coating formulation and process allows Imation to develop and manufacture high quality, high capacity storage media leading to terabyte-class storage capabilities. Imation Tera Angstrom technology incorporates three proprietary processes that produce a uniform coating layer with strong signal strength: the impingement process, the quiescent drying process, and the in-line calendering process. The impingement process uses high-pressure jets with a greater than 10, 000 psi to break the magnetic clusters into nanometer size particles to allow for greater bit and track density. The quiescent drying process helps ensure particles are accurately oriented, and the in-line calendering creates a surface smoothness on the order of angstroms. The resultant tape enables bit and track densities on nano scales to allow for terabyte level storage that will be needed to serve the incessant appetite for greater capacity of data storage for archival and back-up.
