Abstract:
In this presentation we report, for the first time, the successfully fabrication of a near-net shape bulk nanocomponent using plasma spray forming. In the research toward development of a component with retained nanostructure, enhanced oxidation resistance and toughness, MoSi2 matrix was reinforced with Si3N4. The microstructure of the developed component was studied by different characterization techniques such as: FIB, TEM and SEM. The produced bulk nanostructured part was additionally characterized and studied to calculate the elastic modulus, hardness and fracture toughness of the composite. In order to understand the enhanced mechanical properties of the Si3N4–SiC reinforced MoSi2, the authors combine the experimental studies with the theoretical ab-initio simulation study. Thus, the interaction between the heterogeneous particles of MoSi2, Si3N4 and SiC was investigated.
