Abstract:Everyone uses batteries. They come in many sizes, shapes, power densities, and support a wide variety of military, commercial and consumer applications. Therefore, it is surprising how little battery technology has changed since the 1960s especially with the new applications and electronic devices that will require smaller and non-traditional form factors, integration into electronic devices, and longer shelf life. In addition, batteries will need to meet more stringent heat and power criteria, and they will need to address environmental and safety concerns, some of which may be mandated by the government. This talk will present the progress that mPhase and Lucent Bell Labs has made in the one year since they have undertaken developing a novel battery using nano structured surfaces and superhydrophobic coatings.
