Abstract:Nano-scaled TiO2 has now been used in polymer industry due to its promising properties in light catalyst and UV light shielding[1-3]. In the present paper, functional LLDPE/LDPE/TiO2 membranes were successfully manufactured. To solve the poor dispersion of TiO2 in polyethylene, TiO2 was introduced into the blow-forming of LLDPE/LDPE in the form of master batch. As shown in Fig.1, nano-TiO2 exhibited an apparent induced nucleation effect on the crystallization of polyethylene and the size of the sphere crystal decreased while the number increased with the introduction of TiO2. TiO2 also exhibited an random dispersion in the membrane with the average size about 100 nanometers as shown in Fig.2, and this excellent dispersion provided membranes a special UV absorption(Fig.3). The other experimental results showed that the visible light transmittance and mechanical properties of membrane performed a slight change with the introduction of the TiO2. In conclusion, the membranes could satisfy the common requirements on properties while an extra UV absorption function could be provided. This kind of membrane can be used in extensive applications in agriculture and food packing due to its anti-bacterium effect induced by UV absorption.
