Abstract:Changes in gas composition and gas pressure for closed systems containing plutonium dioxide and water are studied using a model that incorporates both radiolysis and chemical reactions. The model is used to investigate the behavior of material stored in storage containers conforming to DOE-STD-3013-99 storage standard. Scaling of the container to allow use of smaller amounts of nuclear material in experiments designed to bound the behavior of all material destined for long-term storage is studied. It is found that the container volume must be scaled along with the amount of material to achieve applicable results.
