California Teen Wins $100K Scholarship for Her Nano Research
Dec 16, 2011
Angela Zhang creates nanoparticle that she describes as a “swiss army knife of cancer treatments.â€
Ms. Zhang, 17, received top honors at the Siemens Foundation annual high school science competition. The teen’s research was inspired by her personal experiences with cancer, including a great grandfather who suffered from liver cancer, and her grandfather passed away from lung cancer a few years ago. Her particle releases the drug when activated by a laser, and Ms. Zhang’s research shows that the particle can deliver treatment directly and effectively to tumor cells and not affect healthy cells around it.
