Research Team at RPI Develop New Method for Self-Assembling Gold Nanoparticles
Professor Sang-Kee Eah of RPI also created 20-micron superlattice domain with the gold coatings, which is the largest ever documented in the lab.
To create the unique gold nanolayer, the researchers filled liquid toluene with gold nanoparticles. The nanoparticles then created a flat monolayer structure of gold on the surface of the liquid. The nanolayer of gold nanoparticles was then moved to another air-water surface, thus forming the superlattice and coated onto a silicon wafer. Dr. Eah and the research group at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute see this discovery as potentially allowing for further scale down of computer chips to the 20nm or 10nm range.
