University of Toronto Develops New Solar PV Cell Design

University team used colloidal quantum dots to create solar cell that can absorb visible and infrared light
In using CQDs, the researchers believe it is the first CQD-based efficient tandem solar cell to be created. Lead Researcher and Professor Ted Sargent, describes the creation process as: “The team engineered a cascade - really a waterfall - of nanometers-thick materials to shuttle electrons between the visible and infrared layers.” The University of Toronto claims that the CQD-based solar cells can capture a wider range of light versus current solar cells. Funding for the project came from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, the Ontario Research Fund Research Excellence Program and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
