Mitsubishi Achieves Company High for Photoelectric Conversion Efficiency in Thin Film PV Cell
Feb 16, 2010
Company’s PV cell utilizes a novel triple junction structure to capture solar energy at a higher rate of efficiency.
Mitsubishi has achieved a high photoelectric conversion efficiency of close to 15% in a 5mm x 5mm thin-film silicon PV cell. The higher rate translates into higher electric current output. The unique triple layer matrix within the PV cell allow for each layer to absorb different sunlight wavelengths; most thin film silicon PV cells currently have a single or double layering structure for energy capture. The company notes that the triple layer structure was achieved using a combination of advanced materials and processes, semiconductor materials, high-quality film-deposition processing, and texture fabrication.
