University of Texas Medical School-Houston Adds New Department of Nanomedicine and Biomedical Engineering

Department will give students opportunities for hands-on experience in these emerging research areas

The Department of Nanomedicine and Biomedical Engineering (nBME) is scheduled to open in 2010, and will have more than 30,000 square feet of office and research space. The university also announced that Mauro Ferrari, Ph.D. will serve as both professor and chairman of the new department. "This is the first department of nanomedicine in a medical school in the United States that I'm aware of," said Ferrari, who has received about $50 million in funding since moving his laboratory to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2006. "They (the students) will get a chance to work with cutting edge nanotechnologies that are engineered for medical applications. They will also get to attend lectures and workshops.”

NWN Note: NSTI has had the honor of Dr. Ferrari as an annual speaker and Symposium Chair for the NSTI Nanotech conferences for several years, participating as a speaker or symposium chair for sessions on Nano Medicine and Cancer Nanotechnology. Click here for more info
