Boeing and Honeywell Want to See If Saltwater Can Become Aviation Fuel Source

Abu Dhabi’s Mastar Institute will lead the study for global aerospace companies

Boeing and Honeywell UOP hope the study will lead to large-scale production of sustainable aviation fuel derived from saltwater plants. The research will uncover and test the feasibility of using salt-resistant halophytes as a biofuel. Halophytes are abundant in arid land and can be irrigated using ocean water, and are seen as an ideal sustainable source of biofuels. The results plan to be released by the end of 2010. The research will be conducted by Abu Dhabi’s Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Masdar is an active player in being clean and green, as it wants to become the world’s first zero-carbon city, and was recently selected to be the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
