Israeli Researchers Discover Novel Way to Charge Solar Cells

Researchers were able to generate electrical field inside the quantum dots of solar cells.

The results of the team’s study were recently published this fall. Project lead was Professor Nir Tessler of the Zisapel Nano-Electronics Center in the Technion Department of Electrical Engineering. Quantum dots were used because they are the ideal material to create low-cost, high-efficiency solar cells, versus silicon that is expensive to manufacture for solar cell application. Dr. Tessler and his colleagues generated strong electrical fields in the quantum dots by covering them with two distinct organic molecules. The research team was able to then show that the electricity was generated by the chemicals which attached the molecules to the dots’ surface area.
