Arizona State University new home of the NSF-DOE Engineering Research Center for Quantum Energy and Sustainable Solar Technologies (QESST)

QESST will receive $18.5 Million in investments from the NSF and DOE through 2016.

The new Center will develop interdisciplinary research and education programs for advanced solar photovoltaic technologies, and also provide the technology foundation for emerging industries. This is the first time an Engineering Research Center has been co-funded by the NSF and another federal agency (DOE). QESST will focus on fundamental materials research in areas of silicon, thin film, and tandem solar cells, while addressing systems-level challenges of manufacturability and integration. While QESST will be based in Arizona, the Center will be developed in partnership with the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Delaware, and the University of New Mexico. The Center is also tapping international expertise; Imperial College-London, University of New South Wales in Australia, and University of Tokyo will contribute additional expertise and international perspectives.
