IBM and Singapore Researchers Use Semiconductor Technology as New Weapon to Fight Disease and Bacteria

Industry-academic research groups team up to tailor semiconductor chemicals to build nanostructures that can fight infectious diseases
Researchers from IBM and Singapore’s Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology used several chemicals typically reserved for chips and servers to create novel polymers that can detect and destroy infectious diseases and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The 22nm and 14nm nodes of the nanostructures developed by IBM provide the ideal vessel to attract infected cells and remove harmful bacteria, while leaving the healthy cells intact. The nano-medicine polymers are also biodegradable and can exit the body naturally.
