Considerable demand exists for renewable and biodegradable plastics. Previous attempts to provide such plastics have met with mixed results in the trade off between biodegradability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. The invention discloses a strong nanocomposite with improved thermal stability comprised of cellulose compounds, an environmentally beneficial solution satisfying the above-mentioned dilemma. Current methods for manufacturing CNW’s are costly, and the IP uses a proprietary HCl route that preserves the mechanical properties of the CNW’s, is scalable and is cost effective.

This technology enables increased use of polymers based on renewable resources and has a potential of replacing PVS, PS and polyolefines etc. in a number of products. While the organization has not quantified the market size, the IP is well-positioned for the fast-growing renewable energy market.

The IP has both a US and Norwegian patent, and has proven manufacturability.
