Venture Profile: Aphios

Aphios has developed an improved biomass pretreatment process [the CFC process] that has the combined capability to defibrate biomass at low operating temperatures.

Founder & CEO: Dr. Trevor P. Castor
Location: Woburn, MA, USA
Industry: Pharma & Biotech
Venture is: A-Round

Biomass resources are currently greatly underutilized in the United States and countries around the world. If effectively exploited, these resources can reduce our dependency on foreign oil while alleviating several environmental problems. Aphios has developed an improved biomass pretreatment process [the CFC process] that has the combined capability to defibrate biomass at low operating temperatures [US Patent Pending].

As founder of Aphios, Dr. Castor has 25 years of diversified business experience ranging from management, marketing and finance to technology and business development in the energy, environmental and biopharmaceutical industries. He is the primary author of Aphios’ 29-issued U.S. and international patents and 15-pending patents.

Dr. Castor recently informed NWN of some exciting business news. Aosic BioEnergy, a spin-off of biotech company Aphios Corporation, plans to develop and commercialize a novel, carbon-consuming biomass pretreatment process for the manufacturing of cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels. Aosic also plans to develop novel high temperature and possibly, high pressure, enzymes from extremophilic terrestrial and marine environments for further improvements in the enzymatic conversion of cellulose and hemi-cellulose to ethanol and other biofuels. Aosic’s BioEnergy is raising its first round of capital to establish a pilot plant to demonstrate the CBP pretreatment process on a pre-commercial scale, and then to integrate a pilot plant into a Beta-site plant for the manufacturing of cellulosic ethanol.
