France Pledges $35 Billion Euros to Gain Competitive Advantage in Higher Education, Research, and Innovation

President Nikolas Sarkozy looks to strengthen France’s economic future through research, technology, and education

President Sarkozy noted in his press conference, “We want to have the best universities in the world, because with the best universities in the world we will win the battle of competitiveness.” Close to one-third of the investment ($11b euros) will go towards higher education. Another $8 billion euros will be applied to research, including emerging technologies of biotechnology and nanotechnology, with some of the funding to be applied to market applications. The rest of the funds will be distributed to efforts related to small and mid-size business investments, sustainable development, and high speed broadband and digital library initiatives.
