U.K. Company Unveils New Chip Design
The British company ARM has created the new Cortext-A8, a processor that could power a new generation of cellular phones. The new chip can deliver up to 2000DMips and for the first time it puts a mobile phone chip in the same category as a desktop processor. If this technology’s full potential is achieved, it could bring a wide range of new features to cellular phones, including high definition games and video. ARM has signed deals to explore this technology with companies including Matsushita, Samsung, and Texas Instruments. ARM expects production of the new chip to begin in 2006, with products featuring the Cortext-A8 to become available to the market by about 2008.
