Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute and Siemens Medical Solutions Sign Cooperative Contract For Collaboration in Proton Therapy Planning
The agreement allows Siemens Medical Solutions of Germany access to the knowledge of proton therapy planning at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a multi-disciplinary research center for technology and natural sciences. In exchange, Siemens will be allowed to test its own methods at PSI and will support research at the Swiss Institute. The PSI is the only institute in the world that uses Spot Scanning for proton therapy and has been treating patients with this method since the late 1990s. Compared to traditional radiation therapy that primarily uses photons to kill tumors, the physical properties of protons give proton beams an unsurpassed advantage to deliver the precise dose of energy to the tumor and reduce adverse effects to healthy tissue.
