Innovative “Nanospikes” Could Greatly Enhance the Materials in Solar Cells, Hip & Bone Prosthetics, and Much More
Dr. Mool C. Gupta, Langley Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia’s Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, discovered the “nanospike” technology. A nano/micro laser technology was used to create the “nanospikes” on semiconductor and metal surfaces. The spikes increase a surface area, thus improving the effectiveness of a material. Dr. Gupta sees multiple applications for texturing metals using this innovative method, such as trapping light more effectively in solar cells, or using “nanospikes” to improve cell growth on a prosthetic to increase the chances of a body accepting the implant.
