Leading Chip Makers Join Forces to Create $600 Million Consortium for Nanolithography
Chip makers IBM, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Infineon Technologies AG, and Micron Technology Inc. are partnering with ASML Holding NV and KLA-Tencor Corporation in a $600 million, seven-year consortium called the International Venture for Nanolithography (INVENT). The consortium will be hosted by the University of Albany in New York and would seek ways to develop chips with smaller features and provide training. The four chipmakers are set to contribute $200 million, the other companies involved are expected to contribute $220 million, and New York State has allocated $75 million to the University of Albany on top of the $30 million the state has already invested in Albany Nanotech. Additional public and private investments received by the university will push total funding to over $600 million.
