Silicon and Germanium Nanowires Synthesized in Organic Solvents

Abstract:For the past several years, we have been developing methods to produce crystalline silicon and germanium nanowires in large quantities using solution-based chemical routes. These approaches are potentially scalable to >kg/day production of nanowires, which opens the possibility of commercial application to a variety of technologies, including new functional nanocomposites, solar cells, printed electronics, chemical and biological sensing and nanoelectromechanical devices. This presentation will cover the basic synthetic approach, some of the chemical challenges of the approach, and will highlight some of the physical properties of these unique materials.
