Nanoscience and Technology in Ireland

J. Boland
CRANN & Trinity College Dublin, IE

Keywords: Ireland, nanotechnology

Abstract:

This talk will provide an overview of Ireland’s activities in nanoscience and nanotechnology (NS&T). From the outset Ireland identified NS&T as a sector in which it could potentially compete and has invested more per capita nationally, including significant capital infrastructure, state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation. Critical to the success of this initiative is the international recruitment of researchers in which universities, funding and government agencies work together to offer competitive recruitment and start-up packages. People, infrastructure and research excellence are the cornerstones of Irelands’ NS&T R&D strategy. The Team Ireland approach is to embrace the open innovation model and leverage the above investment to compete on the world stage to partner with industry and identify research challenges that have clear intersects with industry roadmaps or form the basis for new technology platforms. CRANN is Irelands’ leading NS&T centre and an overview of its research activities, outputs and industry engagement model will be presented.
