Abstract:
We have been developing sensor networks for monitoring glaciers since 2002 and have found that the real-world challenges drive the research and development effectively. We purposely designed the whole sensor network from scratch including embedded system and radio communications in order to understand every aspect of a system’s performance. Our deployments in Norway also showed that the necessity for a multidisciplinary team. This talk will discuss the progression of hardware/software solutions as well as the pragmatic engineering lessons learnt. It will also show how the use of semantic web technology is being used to bring sensor networks together into a common resource.
