Abstract:

Bayer Technology Services GmbH (BTS) is actively pursuing the development of nanomaterials such as Baydots®, Bayink® and Au/Ag nanoparticles with a characteristic diameter in the range of 1-20 nm. These nanoparticles have unique chemical and physical properties, with applications in medical, electronics, catalysis and new composite materials. The above mentioned applications require strict quality in terms of size, shape and size distribution. A new synthesis process based on microtechnology has been developed to overcome the obstacles in traditional batch processes such as low reproducibility, high production cost, and scale-up problems. Bayer Technology Services (BTS) along with its subsidiaries worldwide are focused on developing a comprehensive Process Technology to address the need for functional nanomaterials. The microtechnology based process can deliver nanomaterials with controlled parameters in a cost effective manner. The process is also aimed to minimize post processing before adapting the nanoparticles for different applications via size control and functionalized surface treatments. The comprehensive process technology uses a wide range of micro channel and microfluidic devices suited to individual materials. This technology has the following advantages: o highly efficient heat exchange and rapid mixing o excellent reproducibility o potential for scale-up and cost-effective production The BTS processes allow the synthesis of nanomaterials with specific properties: o semiconductor & nanophosphor materials covering absorption and emission wavelengths from UV to IR o technology to encapsulate nano-particles o different sizes and morphologies for Baydots ® o outstanding monodispersity for metalic nanoparticle Some exciting results are shown in the next page.
