Nanocrystalline NiFe2O4 particles synthesized by citrate – Urea assisted combustion process

Abstract:

Lithium-ion batteries are most widely used in high quality electronic devices because of their high energy density, high voltage and long cycle-life. Current research in this pointed towards the development of new electrode and electrolyte materials for the better performance and safety of the battery. The spinel ferrites (MFe2O4) belong to an important class of magnetic materials and shown reversible reactions in lithium cells, which are recently used as electrodes in lithium ion battery. Nanostructured materials showed better electrochemical performance compared to its bulk due to they high surface area and reduction in the lithium ion diffusion length, etc. Different wet chemical methods are used for the preparation of nanostructured NiFe2O4, among them, combustion route is capable of producing nanocrystalline powder at a lower calcination temperature in a short time.Nanocrystalline NiFe2O4 was prepared using citrate – urea assisted combustion process by varying the metal ions: citric acid: urea ratio as 1:1:0.5, 1:1:1 and 1:1:2.The complete process is monitored by XRD, FTIR DSC and SEM-EDS analysis. 1:1:0.5 composition sample showed better foamy nature, better heat evolution, result in very fine powder compared to other compositions.
