Bahram “Bob” Farahmand is active in the areas of virtual testing, progressive failure analysis of metallic and polymer material, and nanotechnology with emphasis in multiscale modeling & simulation. Dr. Farahmand is the author of several fracture control plans written for the ISS, Delta, DC/XA, 2GRLV, X-37, and Orbital Space Plane (OSP) programs. He was assigned by NASA to participate in failure assessment of Shuttle Columbia. Bob is known internationally for his virtual testing concept that can generate fracture properties of material without conducting costly and time consuming tests. He led numerous tiger teams within the Boeing Company (RS-68 & RL-10B engines, RTF, COPV, Delta II & IV, Sustainer failure). He is the author of three textbooks, more than 60 technical papers, a chapter book, and authored the Boeing-HB Fracture Mechanics Handbook (R-35 SSC).

Bob has been invited as a guest speaker to several universities and taught several courses on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM) to structural analysts throughout the Boeing Company. In addition, he has developed and successfully introduced into practice a unique nonlinear fracture mechanics theory “Fracture Mechanics of Ductile Materials,” that is considered to be a major advancement in failure and fracture properties prediction capability. He is currently a member of technical advisory team within the NSF/Industry consortium.
