Nanotechnology: Hyped, but Misunderstood, Un(der)regulated, and Ethically Unexceptional--What’s an Ethicist to Do?
S. Johnson Alden March Bioethics Institute, Alband Medical College, US
Keywords: nanotechology, ethics, regulation, policy, government
Abstract: Each year, the US government spends more than $1 billion on nanotechnology research and development. More than 500 nanotechnology-based consumer products exist on the market—and the projections for nano-based products and economic development in the next 10 years is staggering. Yet less than 1 in 10 Americans would say they know a lot about nanotechnology and only 1 in 5 would say they know even some (Wilson Center 2006). Moreover, Europe is vastly ahead of the United States in regards to regulating nanotechnology.
