Layer-By-Layer Formation of Polymer Micro Capsules for Drug Delivery Application

The development of novel surface coating using the concept of layer by layer assembly (LbL) has gained extensive attention over these years, driven by a desire to develop highly functional materials in the form of nano or micro capsules particularly for targeted drug delivery applications. Such a design enables enhanced loading of the bioactive components and targeting to a specific site. Additional features such as the ability to respond to environmental stimuli could also be imparted through this approach. Hollow polymer particle with dimensions in the sub micrometer region possess great potential for encapsulation of large quantities of biologically active molecules in their empty core domain, decompose and release their contents upon physical, chemical or biological triggers. But the conventional chemistry requires costly synthetic procedure and in special cases allows such particles to be prepared with exact control over their size and morphology. Here we report the synthesis of hollow capsule using the LbL technique.
