A polymer coating incorporating nanoparticles as an alternative to vacuum deposition

Abstract:
A research partnership headed by Optical Dynamics LLC (VDL) has developed a “green chemistry” route to produce thin film nanocomposites used to spin coat optical elements. The research effort led to a commercialized product, nanoCLEAR, which is an antireflective coating for plastic eyeglass lenses. The four processing steps, nanoparticle synthesis, stabilization of the nanoparticle product, addition of photopolymerizable monomers, and spin coating in the Optical Dynamics manufacturing system, all take place in the same solvent. This unified approach also addresses a number of potential nanotoxicology issues associated with the synthesis, recovery, and use of nanoparticles in commercial products. The nanoparticles are synthesized in the liquid phase, so that aerosols of nanoparticles are not released at any time. The nanocomposite is polymerized in place using ultraviolet lamps, leaving the nanoparticles chemically bound within a polymer matrix.
