Abstract: We present a novel approach to form one-dimensional (1D) organic structures based on the selective adsorption of organic molecules on silicon nanowires. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are used to investigate these organic 1D-structures. We demonstrate that specific molecules react selectively and exclusively with the silicon nanowires and form 1D-organic nanowires via chemical reaction. We also establish that the electronic structure of the nanowires undergoes a significant transition from metallic to semi-conducting upon chemisorption of these molecules.
