Continuous Hydrothermal Flow Syntheses of Nanosize Materials Used In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract: Our research group has developed a novel nanomaterials synthesis method using a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) reactor. In this reactor, nanosize particles are produced through co-precipitation in supercritical water. Sub 50 nm sized particles were successfully synthesized, including yttira stabilized zirconia (YSZ, electrolyte in SOFCs), Ni/YSZ cermets (anode) and lanthanum nickelate nanomaterials (cathode). These materials were rapidly and efficiently made via CHFS method and reveal remarkable improvements in the electron/ion conducting properties. The results obtained herein is further evidenced the La4Ni3O10 compound as a more promising cathode candidate used in the intermediate-temperature SOFCs and indicate the advantage use of nano technology in energy generation.
