Nanocomposites and Nanofluidics

Emmanuel P. Giannelis

Emmanuel P. Giannelis

Director, Materials Science and Engineering
Walter R. Read Professor of Engineering
Cornell University

Before coming to Cornell, Giannelis was a post-doctoral associate at the Center for Fundamental Materials Research (1985-86) and the Composites Center at Michigan State University (1986-87). He won the Dean’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1994. He is a member of several scientific societies including American Chemical Society, American Ceramic Society, Materials Research Society, and Sigma Xi.  He serves on the Editorial Boards of Chemistry of Materials and Macromolecules.

Work in polymer nanocomposites has exploded over the last few years.  The prospect of a new materials technology that can function as low-cost alternative to high-performance composites for applications ranging from automotive to food packaging to tissue engineering has become irresistible to researchers around the world.

At Cornell, Prof. Giannelis’ group has been focusing on several fronts ranging from new synthetic approaches to characterization and modeling.  Our objective is to build an understanding that will permit the prediction and control of nanocomposite properties.

Speaking in the special symposium on Composites & Interfaces.
