Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Polyaniline-Based Magnetic Nanocomposites for EMI Applications

Abstract:
we have synthesized composite of polyaniline (PANI) with manganese-zinc-ferrite (MnXZn1-XFe2O4) nanoparticles. PANI was synthesized by polymerization of aniline in the presence of ammonium peroxydisulfate and HCl. Electrical conductivity of bare PANI pellets averaged 0.8044 ( ·m)-1. MnXZn1-XFe2O4 nanoparticles, where ‘x’ is the atomic fraction of Mn species, were synthesized by co-precipitation method using ZnCl2, MnCl2.4H2O and FeCl3.6H2O as precursor materials. The average crystallite size of ferrite nanoparticles was estimated at 11 nm for ‘x’ values 0.8 and 0.9. The corresponding room-temperature saturation magnetization values were 49.8 emu/g and 55 emu/g. Mn-Zn ferrite nanoparticles were dispersed in aniline/HCl solution, during the polymerization process in order to achieve suitable dispersion and, hence, homogeneity of the magnetic properties in the final composites. XRD analyses suggested the formation of the ferrite nanocrystals and PANI, whereas the incorporation of the ferrite nanocrystals in the PANI matrix was evidenced by SQUID measurements. The rising trend in the magnetization of the nanocomposite with increasing amount of the ferrite has also been verified . The results of the morphological characterization by XRD, Atomic Force Microscopy, HRTEM and electrical conductivity measurements of the magnetic nanocomposites will also be presented and discussed.
