Synthesis and Characterization of Metallic Nanoparticles of Cu, Co and Cu-Co by Reactive Milling.

Abstract:
The production of metallic nanoparticles by means of a mechanochemical process is reported. High energy mills are used. The reaction between powders and activated by ball milling involves metallic chlorides and Na in a protective NaCl environment. Such an environment hinders metallic agglomeration beyond a few nanometers producing a fine dispersion of nanoparticles. The present work includes production of nanoparticles of Co (fcc or hcp), depending on milling energy (EM) and dispersion in NaCl. Cu nanoparticles are also obtained in different sizes as a function of EM and fvNaCl. Additionally mixing the appropriate amount of metallic chlorides, alloyed nanoparticles have been produced (Cu-10 at. % Co). Further heat treatment gives rise to unmixing of Co and Cu, a fine dispersion of Co particles can be produced. It is expected that such particles can coarsen to form a core shell structure. Such experiments are in progress. The powders are characterized by X-Ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and calorimetry.
