Preparation and Characterization of Manganese Oxide Nanowhiskers

Abstract:
Manganese oxide is used for catalyst in organic chemistry, electrode for lithium ion batteries, and magnetic materials. When manganese oxide is in a form of powder, wire, or whisker and in nanometer sizes, it would show higher activity and efficiency. In this study, we prepared nano-size whiskers of manganese oxide by the soft chemistry templating synthesis method, and characterized them by electron microscopy and spectroscopy. Nano-size whiskers were prepared from manganese chloride solution with an addition of directing agent polymers. It was noted that nano-size whiskers grew from the surface of nano-size particles of hausmannite, Mn3O4. The structure and chemistry of whiskers were analyzed by using transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. It was found that most nanowhiskers had nano-size domains of short-range ordered point-type defects. Atomic ratio of oxygen to manganese varied in a range of 0.7-1.6 showing that manganese oxide nanowhiskers with various chemistry were grown from hausmannite nanoparticles.
