Controlling the Nano- and Microstructure in POSS containing Epoxy Networks

Abstract:
The polymer nanocomposites based on the epoxy network were prepared by incorporation of well-defined nanobuilding blocks – polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) in the polymer matrix. The mono- and polyfunctional POSS monomers were used to be attached either as pendant units on the polymer chain or as nanojunctions of the network. The reaction kinetics, molecular and phase structure evolution during polymerization of the system, diepoxide – diamine - (epoxy/amine) POSS, were followed by FTIR, chermorheology experiments and SAXS. The structure and morphology were characterized by TEM, SAXS, WAXS and dynamic mechanical analysis. Nano- and microstructure of the systems was controlled by taking into account both thermodynamic and kinetic effects governing the hybrid network formation during polymerization. Topological localization of POSS in the network, compatibility of POSS with the epoxy system given by character of POSS substituents, relative reactivity of POSS functionalities and the way of polymerization procedure are the main factors used to control the structure. We have synthesized the nanocomposites with well dispersed nanounits, with nanodomains of POSS aggregates as well as with ordered POSS crystalline layers. In the latter case the epoxide network served as a template for self-assembling the POSS units within the matrix.
