| Tom O’Donnell
Business Development Manager Technology Center Group Cisco Systems, Inc., US
| Tom O’Donnell is currently a Business Development Manager within the Technology Center Group at Cisco Systems, Inc. Technology Center functions as an internal advanced technology and market opportunity incubator for Cisco. The group reports into Cisco’s Corporate Development Group and works very closely with the established business unit, strategic alliance and M&A teams. In collaboration with Technology Center’s advanced engineering team, Tom focuses on identifying and developing new technology and market opportunities for Cisco. This includes work on disruptive market strategies, enabling business models, essential technology or business partnerships (including investments), specific strategies to address regulatory hurdles and overall solutions for unique operational requirements. Current areas of interest include pervasive / ad-hoc / mesh networking, sensor networking, wireless, grid computing, security, alternative access technologies, IP telephony and next-generation routing protocols. Tom is also currently leading a Cisco initiative to engage more aggressively with and create linkages to the broader Boston area emerging technology community, including early-stage technology companies, VCs, research centers and academia. Tangible results of this initiative include Cisco’s recent sponsorship of both the MIT Media Lab’s Digital Life Consortium and MIT’s Communication Futures Program (CFP). Previously at Cisco, Tom held leadership roles in the technical sales organization on the Enterprise, Service Provider and Channel teams. Prior to Cisco, Tom was a senior network consultant for Bolt Beranek and Newman’s (BBN’s) Systems and Technologies Division in Cambridge, MA and a system engineer for GTE Government Systems in Needham, MA. He holds a B.S.E.E. from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, M.S. Computer Engineering from Boston University and M.S. Management from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. In addition, Tom is a member of the Research Advisory Board for the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) John Adams Innovation Institute.
