T. James Rudd

Program Manager for SBIR

Dr. Rudd joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) in July 2001 as a Program Manager in the Small Business Innovation Research Program, a $105 million grant program supporting small business development in advanced materials and manufacturing, biotechnology, electronics and information technology.  At NSF he specializes in electronics technology and manufacturing and has overall responsibility for grants involving nanotechnology. He is a member of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology (NSET) subcommittee of the President’s National Science and Technology Council. He is also responsible for the SBIR/STTR MatchMaker program at NSF, which matches grantee companies with investors and industrial partners to aid in commercialization.

Before joining NSF, Dr. Rudd spent over twenty years in senior R&D management positions in the manufacturing industry involving advanced materials; electronics; and special machinery. His last position before joining NSF was Corporate Director of Technology for Dexter Corporation, a Fortune 500 specialty materials company headquartered in Connecticut. Prior to that Dr. Rudd was Vice President of Technology and Engineering for Mallory Controls an electrical/electronics unit of Emhart Corporation, a multinational, widely diversified producer of industrial and consumer products, and information and electronic systems. His first appointment after graduate school was with Bell Laboratories as a Member of the Technical Staff supporting the NASA Apollo program and later the AT&T Switching Systems Group in Holmdel, NJ.

Dr. Rudd received his Ph.D in Applied Mechanics from the University of California at Berkeley, and his MBA in Industrial Marketing from the University of Hartford. A native of the U.K., Dr. Rudd received his engineering training with the Dowty Group, an aerospace and hydraulics company, and obtained his B.Sc. with honors in Mechanical Engineering from London University. He taught engineering at the college level before emigrating to the U.S. in 1965. He is a member of the ASME, AIAA, IEEE, ACS, TMS and IMechE (U.K) and past member of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Research Institute and the Board of Trustees of the Science Center of Connecticut.
