| Douglas B. Chrisey is the Deputy Director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) which is the largest interdisciplinary research entity at North Dakota State University. Dr. Chrisey earned a B.S. degree in Physics from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1983 and a Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from The University of Virginia in 1987. He then joined the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in 1987 as an American Society for Engineering Education Postdoctoral Research Associate, becoming a staff member in 1988. He spent the next 17 with NRL, becoming Section Head of the Plasma Processing Section in 1990. His research interests at NRL included the novel laser fabrication of thin films and coatings of advanced electronic, sensor, and biomaterials. These materials were used in device configurations for testing and typically have an improved figure of merit. In particular, the processing of these materials included oxide ceramic thin films by Pulsed Laser Deposition, the MAPLE (Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation) deposition of polymers and biomolecules, and the MAPLE Direct Writing of electronic and biomaterials. He has organized many laser-based international conferences especially with the Materials Research Society and the European Materials Research Society and publishes extensively in applied physics journals. His NRL research has resulted in 400 citable publications and over 4,000 citations and he has edited or co-edited 15 books and holds 15 patents. As the Deputy Director at CNSE, Dr. Chrisey provides administrative leadership for teams of faculty, staff, and students performing research on wireless sensor electronics design and manufacturing, electronic materials science, and polymeric and hard protective coatings. He is responsible for the preparation, promotion, and execution of a visionary roadmap for the growth, evolution, and utilization of the center’s research capabilities.
