Enhancement of Mechanical Properties and Environmental Resistance of Glass Fibre from Nanocomposite Coating

Abstract:
The severe surface flaws of brittle materials can be ‘healed’ using coating. Here, we describe an inexpensive and applicable process by which a nanometer-scale polymer coating layer based on styrene butadiene with varied clays and nanotubes, as environmental barrier coating layer, was applied to alkali-resistant glass (ARG) fibres. Our data indicates that the glass fibre with the nanoscale coating shows significantly improved both mechanical properties and corrosion resistance to alkali. Moreover, an assessment of changes in the fibre surface nanomechanical properties is provided and a strong correlation between the tensile strength, roughness and Griffith fracture predictions is noted.
