Controlled Growth of Aligned ZnO Nanowires

Abstract:
The present work reports a detailed investigation of the catalytic growth of aligned ZnO nanowires/rods through the control of parameters such as the Au catalyst layer thickness, pressure, deposition temperature, and oxygen ratio. The purpose is to achieve a controllable and reproductive process for ZnO aligned growth.
Overall, our work suggests that the conditions for aligned growth are basically determined by the concentration of Zn vapor on the sample and its possibility of being oxidized. A very specific amount of vapor is necessary to have the correct rate of growth, which then leads to having aligned wires. By controlling such parameters aligned nanowires/rods with different diameter and length can be grown reproducibly. The control of the aligned growth is crucial for the eminent use of ZnO nanowires in many technological applications.
