Nanotechnology Patents with Demonstrated Commercial Value: An Analysis of the Characteristics of Licensed Nanotechnology Patents from Publicly Announced Commercialization Deals

S.B. Maebius and M. Manning
Foley & Lardner, US

Keywords:
nanotechnology, patents, IP valuation, license

Abstract:
There are literally thousands of nanotechnology patents issued, but only a small subset have already demonstrated commercial value. Utilizing publicly announced commercialization deals involving nanotechnology patents, a survey of the underlying patents has uncovered characteristics important to their licensability. These shared characteristics of licensable nanotechnology patents will help investors who need to value nanotechnology IP in a variety of contexts, such as when forming new companies and when evaluating out-licensing or in-licensing opportunities.
