Abstract:
Solexant is developing IR photon harvesting nanostructures to increase silicon solar cell efficiency. Solexant nanostructured solar cells are expected to double solar cell efficiency and decrease solar cell cost ($/MW) by >30% and decrease solar energy cost ($/kWh) by >30%.

Most of the solar cells are made from silicon – single crystalline, polycrystalline or amorphous silicon. Significant amount of solar radiation comprises of IR photons which are not harvested by silicon solar cells thereby limiting their conversion efficiency.

Solexant nanostructures are made from IR absorbing materials covering the spectral range of 800-2,000nm. Solexant nanostructured solar cells are prepared by integrating IR photon harvesting nanostructures with crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon (a-Si) and/or microcrystalline silicon (u-Si) solar cells.

Solexant business model is to develop, make and sell IR absorbing nanostructured materials to solar cell manufacturers. Solexant also plans to license nanostructured solar cell designs to solar cell manufacturers.

Solexant plans to build proof of concept nanostructured solar cells by the end of 2006
