Abstract:
Modern nano-biotech and life science strive to identify molecular patterns that correlate with disease states. The goal is to detect diseases, such as cancer, on a molecular level at very early stages when treatment is generally far more effective and causes substantially fewer and less severe side effects. The information sought is contained in the mass distribution of organic macromolecules. Mass spectrometers have become one of the most important tool in that effort due to the invention of ''MALDI''. In fact, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption and Ionization (Nobel Price in Chemistry 2002) revolutionized the application of mass spectrometers in life science, in particular in proteomics but also in functional genomics and metabolomics. GEMIO Technologies, Inc. is creating next generation EPI-MALDI ion sources for biological macromolecules which will enable unprecedented sensitivity levels of mass spectrometric analysis.
